Follow these few simple rules and your grill grates will last a lifetime.
When it comes to grill grates, there are a few different materials that you will see them in. there is porcelain coated steel. There is the look-alike steel and there is the stainless steel which are great. I personally have the porcelain on my commercial charbroil and have no issues with chipping or cracking of the porcelain and let me tell you why. First of all, never, ever use a scraper on your grill grates. I know you might be thinking " but the brush I bought at the store had one on it, it must be there for a reason, right?." Yeah, the reason is so you ruin your grates and have to buy new ones so they earn additional money from you. If you buy a brush at the store, break off the scraper or remove the screws that some of them come with immediately. Well, that's my conspiracy theory. Secondly, as mentioned in another section, make sure the bristles are brass. This is softer than your porcelain coating on the grates and will not damage them. This is very important for keeping those grates looking great. Sorry for the play on words, I couldn't help myself. This rule also applies to any grate, no matter what it's made out of or coated with. Finally, use oil to season the grates. Pam for grilling or grill wipes like I get at Lowe's or olive oil on a paper towel. And guys, please don't let your wife convince you to stick the grates in the dish washer. That is one of the most common questions I got at Lowe's. I know women want things to look nice but one the grates are seasoned, leave them alone. The only kind of cleaning they need is a brushing off with the brass bristled brush after you pre-heat your grill and then a wipe down with the oil. That's it, nothing else. If you follow these few very simple steps, I promise you will be much happier about the condition of your grates over time. The only reason people have to use foil on the grill is because their grates are rusty and they don't want rust in their food. After reading this, you should never have to be the foil over the rusty grill grates guy. Happy grilling. Please give me any feed back if you think I missed anything. I know I don't know everything, it's just my expert opinion.
